NEW YORK (Billboard) - In 2004, U.K.-based independent label Memphis Industries released the sample-heavy, intentionally lo-fi and daringly jarring “Thunder, Lightning, Strike,” the Go! Team’s debut full-length CD.

The buzz was deafening, so in 2005, the label entered a joint venture with Sony BMG to distribute the album internationally, with the major’s Columbia subsidiary handling it in the United States.

It’s a turn of events that every band dreams of — unless that band is the Go! Team.

The brainchild of Ian Parton, the Go! Team was never supposed to be mainstream. Parton set out to make “dirty” pop songs — danceable, catchy tunes that were enveloped by chaos and besieged by left turns.

Looking for the next hot thing in emo? Well, keep looking. Escape the Fate is not going to be able to escape their fate. To be fair, is not a terrible album it is just horribly lackluster. It doesn’t seem to know what it wants to be. It slips back and forth through emo, screamo, and pop-punk. It seems like they weren’t sure what direction to take and chose to throw everything at the wall to see what would stick. I am vaguely reminded of Sugar Ray and their everything but the kitchen sink approach to , and when “Fly” hit, every song after sounded just like it. Of course, that is a different case, but the comparison popped into my head and feels rather appropriate.

In the annals of rock n’ roll no other rock band has a more checkered or colored existence other than Kiss. Whether you love them or hate them, Kiss is undeniably one of the most influential rock bands on the planet. It’s funny to think that if not for a double live album, they may have potentially disappeared into obscurity. In 1975 on the heels of three poorly selling studio albums, the band and their record label, Casablanca, made the gutsy decision to release a double live album. It was not only a wise choice but to this day “Alive!” is viewed as the essential Kiss album and the one by which all others are judged.

Universal Music recently released a 4-disc live box set entitled ‘Alive 1975-2000′. Housed inside this package are the first three ‘Alive’ albums and an unreleased one from their 1999/2000 Millennium show. This fourth album was to have been ‘Alive IV’ and put out in support of the band’s farewell tour in 2000, however, it never saw the light of day until now. If one were to buy this box it would most likely be a double dip for most fans, so I’m here to break down the contents for you so you can make a decision.

Singer, songwriter, arranger and record producer Lee Hazlewood died Saturday (Aug.4). In 2005 he was diagnosed with terminal renal cancer, yet undertook an extensive round of interviews and promotional activities in support of his latest album, Cake or Death.

Hazlewood is best known for writing the 1960s Nancy Sinatra hit, “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’”. He also wrote “Houston,” a hit recorded by Dean Martin. He was for a time a mentor to Phil Spector in the late 1950s. However, his own output also achieved a cult status in the underground rock scene, with songs covered by artists such as Lydia Lunch, Primal Scream, Einstürzende Neubauten, Nick Cave, Anita Lane, Megadeth, and Boyd Rice.

Interestingly how we all kind of intuited this before long, even if it was nothing we thought to articulate. The use of the word “album” diminished as the CD era progressed. Instead of saying, “Did you get the new Radiohead album?” you maybe, more often, said, “Did you get the new Radiohead CD?”

Bonus tracks were but the first step. Once music fans had pretty much abandoned the vinyl LP, by the early ’90s, the industry found itself released once and for all from the time restriction of the vinyl LP. After which point albums, sure enough, became longer. Quite a bit longer.

It wasn’t the like-minded, classical-meets-pop band Bond that gave Wang Xiao-Jing the idea for Twelve Girls Band, it was Chinese numerology according to the man himself. When the “father of Chinese rock music” decided he wanted to create a female ensemble, he knew it needed 12 members. In ancient Chinese mythology it’s the 12 jinchai (12 hairpins) that represent womanhood. The 12 women that Xiao-Jing brought together were veterans of the People’s Republic of China’s top orchestras, played ancient Chinese instruments, and all were in their twenties.

Which is in itself surprising. After all, the 64-year-old guitarist for the Police is a well-traveled rocker. He gigged with psychedelic pioneers Soft Machine in the ’60s. He spent a decade in the Police rocking arenas and stadiums and making platinum records. He even played Carnegie Hall as a solo artist.

But the mad fervor surrounding the Police’s reunion tour - which makes a two-night stop at a sold-out Fenway Park on Saturday and Sunday - is unlike anything he’s ever experienced.

The Meat Puppets are back, and the Kirkwood brothers are talking again.

To anyone familiar with the tragic tailspin that bassist Cris Kirkwood’s life became in the mid-’90s, that’s no small wonder.

His heroin habit sabotaged the Meat Puppets just as they were solidifying their status as one of the most important rock acts to come out of the Valley since Alice Cooper.

“I cost us everything,” he said.

His descent put the brakes on the national success he, his guitarist brother, Curt, and drummer Derrick Bostrom were enjoying: A radio hit with 1994’s Backwater, healthy rotation on MTV, concert bills with Nirvana and the Red Hot Chili Peppers and hefty royalty checks.

At this point, I’m out of jokes about Alberta hip hop. Here at the hill we’ve tapped into a pipeline of Alberta hip hop that flows across the country and ends up in Halifax for me to review. It’s fine by me, as it’s given me the chance to make plenty of jokes about how Alberta is lousy with oil money and out here on the East Coast we, uh, aren’t. Avril Lavigne has responded personally to accusations that her hit song, “Boyfriend,” was plagiarized from a 1970s song by The Rubinoos. She wrote on her Web site, “They claim that a small part of the lyrics are the same and are saying that I took these from them. I had never heard this song in my life and their claim is based on five words! All songs share similar lyrics and emotions. As humans we speak one language.” She also took singer/songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk to task for a perceived slight in a recent magazine article. Kreviazuk worked with Lavigne on her second album, Under My Skin, and released a statement apologizing to Avril. “I would like to apologize for any misconceptions concerning Avril Lavigne, which may have resulted from statements I made in my interview with Performing Songwriter Magazine,” said Kreviazuk. “It was not my intention to call Avril’s songwriting ability or ethics into question. My statements and any inference from my statements, which call into question Avril’s ethics or ability as a respected and acclaimed songwriter, should be disregarded and are retracted. Avril is an accomplished songwriter and it has been my privilege to work with her.”
