The National Dance Company of Korea will re-stage “The Scent of Spring” early next month, aiming to fascinate foreign audiences with the traditional Korean story and aesthetics. It will also serve as the opening piece for the inaugural International Festival of National Theaters scheduled Sept. 8 to Oct. 27.
Titled “Chum, Chunhyang” in Korean, the dance piece was first staged in 2002, choreographed by Bae Jung-hye, a renowned Korean dance expert, and produced by Kook Soo-ho, also a reputed Korean dancer and choreographer.
Chunhyang, whose name means “scent of spring,” is a beautiful girl who often appears in Korean folk tales, most notably in the namesake novel anonymously written in late Joseon Dynasty period.

Campbell Webster admits it’s a daunting task to bring a new chapter in the life of Anne Shirley to the stage in the shadow of a musical that’s still enjoying worldwide success more than four decades after it was first produced.
But “Anne and Gilbert”, which picks up the story of the iconic, red-haired orphan where the original “Anne of Green Gables” musical ends, has enjoyed two years of packed theatres and glowing reviews in Summerside, P.E.I. It’s now set to move beyond the Island next year.
“It’s one of the most successful musicals in the world, so there is something to live up to,” says Webster, the show’s producer. “There is some heavy lifting in the idea of musicalizing it on stage.”

Swerve Festival announced its initial lineup taking place September 28-30, including three premieres of independent feature films, plus screenings of additional short films and music videos. The FUEL TV initiative will also present a dynamic series of activities including free musical performances and art installations at the festival’s primary venue - the Barnsdall Art Park in Hollywood.
“Swerve Festival isn’t just a film festival or a music festival or an art show-it’s all of these things,” says Jonathan Wells, Festival Director. “There’re no sidebars, all of our programs feature top-notch talent that stand on their own, yet are more cohesive as a whole. One of the trademarks of West Coast creative culture is the cross pollination of creative disciplines-art, music and film are interrelated and overlapping. This is the first festival to celebrate that.”

There’s a thin line between style and formula. There’s an even thinner line between homage and plagiarism.
Once somebody makes money with something, the easiest way for that somebody (or for some other somebody) to make more money is to repeat it—to do the same thing again, only different. Do it creatively (like the Beatles, for example) and you’ve got style. Do it poorly, or do it only for craven commercial reasons (which are probably the same thing), and you’ve got formula. Merely do it well, and you’ve got plagiarism.

This summer, millions of Americans eagerly anticipated the arrival of international superstar David Beckham, only to discover, to their dismay, that he plays soccer.
By most accounts, Beckham plays the sport incredibly well — experts say he excels at both kicking the ball and not touching it with his hands. But those skills — impressive as they are — don’t really hold Americans’ attention.
I actually kind of like soccer, but I understand why Americans aren’t interested. As an intellectual pursuit, it simply does not compare to hitting a ball with a stick or throwing a ball into a hoop.

The seasons will change and young lads will grow older and deeper with regret, but Perry Farrell will still be churning out the alternative rock. It’s nice to know that some things are constant. The ex-Jane’s Addiction, ex-Porno for Pyros, Lollapalooza co-creator is bringing the celestial shindig Satellite Party to Emo’s Friday night, along with New York pop rockers Mink. Farrell and team come with their pockets full of uplifting celebration and a sound that makes the memories of growing up in the early ’90s come flooding back. It’s probably just the voice.
For anyone who got into music during the heyday of the alternative scene, used to stay up late throughout the summer of ‘93 to watch their idols on 120 Minutes (MTV), grew their blonde hair long and straight, and got accused of bringing porno to class because he had pulled out and was looking at Jane’s Addiction’s Nothing Shocking (it had a picture of two naked women on the cover) when he should have been doing long division, Perry Farrell is probably the last person you think you’d ever get to have a long conversation with.

For years, this specific music lovers’ lament has been leaking into a culture-wide complaint about the adverse effect of music videos on attention spans, race relations, sexuality and almost every conceivable issue related to teenage delinquency.
In the 1980s and ’90s, the restless, flickering imagery of MTV became virtually synonymous with attention deficit disorders. And the targeted bombardment of hormonally unbalanced teenage boys with a measured supply of bikini-clad babes aroused as much conservative ire as adolescent desire. But maybe it’s worth looking at the issue from another angle: from the point of view, for instance, of the art world.

Tarzan Boy, released in the summer of 1985, was a huge success for Baltimora, debuting in the top 5 not only on the charts of their native Italy but also on the charts of many other European countries including Germany. In August of 1985, the single reached #3 in the UK and found a similar success even in the USA (via EMI), with the single remaining on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for six months and ultimately peaking at #13 in the early spring of 1986.
Baltimora is often considered a one hit wonder since none of their songs came close to the international success of their first single, Tarzan Boy. The single Tarzan Boy bounced back into the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the spring of 1993 as a remix, climbing to #51 thanks to its appearance in the movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III. The frontman of Baltimora Jimmy McShane died of AIDS on 29 March 1995.
